At the end of this activity, students should be able to describe the composition of air and the structure of the atmosphere, explain how the contemporary atmosphere evolved, explain the carbon cycle and discuss how it is disturbed by human activities, explain why the increasing concentration of atmospheric CO2 contributes to global warming, and what the probable results of a prolonged greenhouse effect would be, indicate the sources of sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxides, explain the phenomenon of acid rain, describe the formation of photochemical smog and explain how CFCs disrupt the ozone layer.
