Elements of Group 17

At the end of this activity, students should be able to write the electron configuration of Group 17 elements, describe the trends in the size of atomic and ionic radii in elements of Group 17, state the direction of changes in the melting point and the boiling point in Group 17, discuss the relationship between the atomic structure and the physical properties of elements, describe the trends in the reactivity of halogens, explain why chlorine is more reactive than bromine and state whether a reaction occurs between a molecule of a particular halogen and a simple ion of another halogen.
