At the end of this activity, students should be able to: – explain what minerals are, what rocks are composed of and what is the difference between a rock and a mineral – explain which chemical compounds are the principal components of magma – explain how igneous rocks are formed and classify them according to the form of their crystals – distinguish between intrusive and extrusive rocks – give examples of the most common igneous rocks and explain the differences between them – list the characteristic properties of igneous rocks – know the applications of igneous rocks.
